Front Fiber Optic size 1.0mm VS 1.5mm
« on: August 16, 2013, 04:07:57 PM »
I really like the fiber optic front sight.  I have the CZ 75 Comp rear sight and had the 1.0mm front sight.  After shooting with these sights I noticed that there are several places in the rear sight notch to put the green dot.  It made about one inch of difference on the target at ten yards depending where the front was aligned in the rear notch.
I changed the front sight to a 1.5mm fiber.   WOW !    What an improvement.  There is very little wiggle room in the notch now.  It is much quicker to get a good sight alignment.  My groups have improved to boot.

Good observation. Have a lot of people want wide notched or thin front sight.
Having too much light allows to much error when trying see quickly. Lessening the amount allows you eye to quickly line up and center the sight in the notch.

I believe the larger blade + the larger fiber may help even more.  I'm going to take the "Pepsi Challenge" when I can call CZC on Monday.

Assuming it is kosher with them, I'm going to buy one of each and return the unused one.  If I end up installing both to try them out, I hope they have some value as a used part.  From experience with 1911s, I know I want the wider blade.  This helps me with alignment and acquisition.  Since I'm used to the wider blade, the larger fiber may not be necessary or desirable for me.  I'm not really certain.

I ended up emailing Stuart and Rob at CZC.  I'm going to send the slide from my SA in and go with their recommendation.  I've used similar set-ups on 1911s, and I think the wider blade is the key for me.  I'm still a little anxious about 1.0 vs. 1.5 though...

You can still switch if needed. To me, I'd go with the 1.5 mm. More = easier to align IMO.   Have you decided yet?

No, I've been looking for owner feedback.  I can't seem to find anyone that has tried the wider blade/wider FO combination.  I'm getting older, so I'm leaning that way...

Are the three widths related to accuracy desired?  I am under the impression that the narrower FS is for slow fire, highest precision (perhaps for bullseye shooters), the widest FS is for fastest acquisition at the expense of accuracy. This would leave the middle width as a compromise. Perhaps the middle width is best for young competitive eyes?

What are your thoughts regarding this usage?

I agree with the basic premise, but I'm not aware of a "third" FO diameter.  Is there something other than 1.0 and/or 1.5mm?

In my understanding, the blade difference is purely to eliminate any "empty" space (gaps) in the sight picture.
