I was a specialist to VTN_90 on the Enterprise at Iwo and Okinawa in 1944-1945.
Rather odd. Two of us, an officer and myself, were especially trained in radar countermeasures. I was assigned to ship's company, he to the squadron staff. He supervised the adaptation of five bombers to this equipment. I was the tech to see that it stayed working. In the theater he demonstrated its effectiveness and became the chief operator. Eventually they needed me to relieve him and I went nine times on night bombing runs, absolutely confounding their fire control. I wasn't transferred to the squadron until we were homebound with extensive damages. Always the stranger in their midst, I never made a single friend. They never knew how many lives I protected with my black boxes. It's all right, I knew.
